A MAN who crashed his car into a field rang the police and told them he was drunk.

Blackburn magistrates heard Gary Michael Absalom made the call after leaving his Vauxhall Astra in the field in Sabden.

“Had he not made that call it is likely he would not have been detected,” said Richard Prew, defending.

Absalom, 53, of Taylor Street, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol on June 3.

He was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.

The court heard he had 52 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Mr Prew said Absalom had a telephone row with his estranged wife and decided to drive to her home in Sabden to have things out with her.

“He hit a pot hole and ended up in a field,” said Mr Prew.

“It appears nobody else reported the incident and the police came to his home and breathalyser him as a result of his phone call.”
