POLITICS and education have been two areas that have long dominated society and here they are coming together and giving children the chance to look to what their future could hold.

The then Mayor of Hyndburn Cllr William Parkinson welcomed new members of the council scholars from Mount Carmel High School in Accrington.

The Conservative councillor, who served the Accrington East ward, gave the secondary school pupils a taste of what life in local politics was like in March 1988.

The pupils at the school left their classroom for a day to hold a mock council meeting held in the council chamber of Accrington Town Hall and exploring the facilities on offer.

While much has changed since this photograph from more than 20 years ago, several things remain the same.

The council chamber still plays home to Hyndburn full council meetings, which means it has been home to many debates and controversial decisions over the years.

On the walls remain a recap of council leaders and mayors over the years, meaning William Parkinsons name can still be spotted.

Meanwhile Mount Carmel remains a popular secondary school among pupils in Accrington, with approximately 725 pupil between 11 and 16 recorded on its roll.
