A SHADSWORTH estate will come together for a mini-festival.

Romney Voices will be running the second ever Great Family Hoedown this weekend.

The event – held on Romney Walk – will include a showcase of live bands – including rock and country music – majorettes, doll drums, a DJ and local artists.

There will also be several stalls selling a variety of food, such as Indian, Pakistani and Polish food, as well as wrestling, a tombola and a bouncy castle for families.

Romney Voices vice-chair Cally Kershaw, 55, who is running the event, said the event best showcases the different cultures which make up the local community.

He said: "Everybody can celebrate each other's cultures while recognising what we have in common and we are all in this together.

"We all live on this estate and all being friends will recognise both the differences and celebrate them."

More than 200 people made the trip to the bottom of Romney Walk for the family fun day last year and Mr Kershaw is expecting more people to visit this year.

Bands and artists, including Diamond Dac, BackBeat, Stove Pipe and Clash tribute band On Parole, will perform on a stage which is being donated by scaffolding company, JP Hall.

He said: "We have got more artists this year and starting earlier than last year. We bands didn't start until 4pm and this year they'll start from noon.

"Last year was a low key affair but this year's promises to be bigger and better. Wherever you are in the local just come along and have fun and be happy."

Shadsworth Cllr Jim Shorrock, who represents the area, said: "The festival will be a great way of bringing the community in the area together and I hope it will be a great success."

It will be held at the bottom of Romney Walk, Shadsworth, on Saturday from noon to 9.30pm.

The money raised from the event will be donated to the Jo Cox foundation, which helps tackle community isolation and promote togetherness.
