HUNDREDS of pounds has been stolen by 'despicable' thieves from charity boxes at a pub.

Police said the incident happened on Sunday at the Old England Forever pub in Clayton-le-Moors between 1am and 7.30am.

Thieves broke into the pub in Church Street and stole four charity boxes containing hundreds of pounds collected for local charities.

Police said the empty charity boxes have been recovered and enquiries are ongoing to identify the offenders.

Posting on Facebook, a police spokesman said: "A despicable act that occurred on Sunday 17th June between 01:00 and 07:30 hours at the Old England Forever public house on Church Street, Clayton-le-Moors where the premises was broken into.

"I have no doubt we will catch those responsible."
