COUNCIL bosses said a blocked drain resulted in a town square ‘flooding’ over the weekend.

Residents in Hyndburn complained of large puddles which formed across Accrington’s new £2million town square.

The area is being developed as part of the town centre scheme which are expected to be completed later this year.

However deputy council leader Cllr Paul Cox said the issue was caused by debris getting stuck in the drains.

He said it was cleared on Monday and does not expect anything similar to happen again.

Accrington resident Alex Crook hit out at the council over the floods which formed.

She said: “It’s another example of our wonderful council throwing tens of thousands of pounds away as it never flooded like this in previous years when we had flash down pours.”

Cllr Cox said: “Because of the ongoing work some debris got stuck in the drain.

“People from the council went along on Monday to clear the issue, it’s all fine now.”
