A KEY Commons vote on the Brexit process tomorrow night will see East Lancashire’s MPs split down party lines.

Labour’s Kate Hollern, Julie Cooper and Graham Jones will to support a House of Lords Amendment giving MPs a final say on any deal to leave the European Union.

Conservatives Nigel Evans, Andrew Stephenson and Jake Berry will back Prime Minister Theresa May’s bid to vote down the amendment and have accused their opposition counterparts of betraying their constituents’ overwhelming vote for Brexit in the 2016 Euro-referendum.

Hyndburn Labour MP Mr Jones said: “I shall vote for the Lords amendment. This is about giving Parliament back control over Brexit..

“MPs should not give Theresa May a blank cheque to negotiate a bad Brexit.”

Burnley’s Mrs Cooper said: “This is not about stopping Brexit.

“It is about giving the House of Commons a proper influence so we do not get a bad deal for Burnley and for Britain. We cannot just give the Prime Minister a free hand on this issue.”

Blackburn MP Mrs Hollern will also vote for the amendment.

Government whip and Pendle MP Mr Stephenson said: “This amendment is an attempt to frustrate, stop or water down Brexit.

“The people of my constituency and Lancashire voted for Brexit and the Prime Minister needs the freedom to negotiate the best Brexit deal possible for Britain.”

Ribble Valley MP Mr Evans said:” This is an unbelievably complex negotiation and the Prime Minister needs the backing of MPs across all side to deliver the best Brexit possible for the people of Britain.

“If East Lancashire’s MPs vote to support this amendment they are purely playing party politics and would be prepared to see our Prime Minister handcuffed when trying to negotiate a deal.”

Rossendale and Darwen MP and Northern Powerhouse Minister Mr Berry said: “This amendment is about stopping Brexit and that’s why I will be voting to reject their changes.

“The people of Rossendale and Darwen were clear: they want Brexit.”
