A FORMER Clitheroe Grammar School student is walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Following in the footsteps of Roman soldiers gone before her, Rose Lonsdale is doing the 84-mile trek from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend.

The 19-year-old, from Clitheroe, is raising money for the charity in memory of her family friend, Paul Medcalf, who lost a short battle with cancer in 2009.

The former Ribblesdale High School pupil, is walking the length of the wall along with friends, Jimmy Athey, William Lamond, Katy Murray, Benja Townsend and Rachelle Wong from the Newcastle University, where she studies ancient history. The group is also raising money for the Down Syndrome Association and have raised more than £830, breaking their £300 target.

Miss Lonsdale said: “It’s been great to walk so far.

“We’ve all got lots of blisters from walking every day but the response from our donations has been so amazing it has made everything worth it.

“The nice weather has also helped us, we’ve not had to put up with rain or bad conditions. Paul was supported by Macmillan so the charity has played a big part in my family’s life.”
