A PROLIFIC shoplifter who was given a chance by magistrates responded by offending again four days later.
Blackburn magistrates heard Peter Balmain was jailed for shoplifting in January and March.
He was given a suspended sentence on May 14 but four days later went into Tesco in Haslingden and stole goods worth £165.
Balmain, 42, of Schofield Street, Rawtenstall, pleaded guilty to shoplifting. He was jailed for a total of 16 weeks and ordered to pay £115 victim surcharge.
Janet Sime, defending, said her client found himself in the revolving door syndrome.
"He is released from prison homeless and without benefits and without food," said Miss Sime.
"You may well send him to prison today but when he comes out he will be in exactly the same position."
