THE power of the press left school pupils celebrating success and a cash prize after coming out on top ahead of nationwide competition.

Pictured are proud pupils from St Mary's Primary School in Oswaldtwistle who are celebrating winning a national school newspaper competition.

Titled 'St Mary's Mutterings' the effort featured school news such as events, stories on departing members of staff and articles on what pupils had been getting up to.

The effort was hot off the press when the pupils stood tall in their school uniforms to pose with the finished paper in the photograph taken from June 1990.

As a result of their success, the school picked up a £1,500 prize for the school to boost funding and help give children more opportunities.

Young children worked as a team with some guidance from staff to produce the effort which was also full of pictures.
