A MAN stabbed his mum twice in the back with a carving knife during a row over money.

Blackburn magistrates heard a woman who went to her assistance was knocked to the floor and punched repeatedly by Sean David Fell.

And the court was told Fell had a history of violent offending involving knives and axes.

Fell, 30, of New Road, Waterfoot, pleaded guilty to assaulting Deborah Fell causing her actual bodily harm, assaulting Rebecca Lord and possessing an offensive weapon in Burnley Road East, Waterfoot. He was sent in custody to Burnley Crown Court to be sentenced on May 18.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said at some point during the day Fell had given his mum some money for shopping but later decided he wanted it back.

"He approached her, became aggressive and produced a knife," said Mr Robinson. "He was threatening himself at that point and she ran off. He chased after her and she felt two sharp pains in her back."

Mr Robinson said given the circumstances the magistrates may wonder at the level of the charge.

"The Crown has taken the view that because the wounds were relatively shallow it would have difficulty proving intent for a more serious charge," said Mr Robinson.

He said two women who witnessed the incident but didn't see a knife, tried to intervene. One of them was pushed to the ground sand then punched about the head.

Richard Prew, defending, said the defendant's mother described their relationship as volatile.

"I have to concede that committal to the Crown Court is inevitable.
