HUNDREDS enjoyed celebrations across East Lancashire as parades, fun-days and events were put on for St George's Day.

The patron saint of England is celebrated each year on April 23 and in keeping with tradition, East Lancashire’s scout and guide groups paraded through the streets putting on events in celebration of the day.

The whole of Darwen came together in the Market Square on Saturday to celebrate the day with an array of activities on offer to keep the whole family entertained.

Family favourite's Punch and Judy gave a nod to the past and a giant sized George's Dragon was on show for guests to marvel at.

There was also a flower show, archery, crown making a bouncy castle.

Roy Davies, the mayor of Darwen Town Council, said he hoped everyone 'thoroughly enjoyed' the day.

He said: "We tried our very best to put on as many of the activities for free, so everyone could enjoy the day.

"It's not cheap for families to come to event like this and our aim was to get as many people out onto the streets as possible.

"There were hundreds of people out and about enjoying the good weather and it was a good day all round.

"The sun was shining and I always enjoy attending these events. I think the day was enjoyed by all."

Meanwhile at Clitheroe Castle, a special range of St George and the Dragon themed events, including a treasure hunt competition were held.

Children were offered the chance to hunt for dragon eggs in nests guarded by their parents and there were also craft and story time sessions.

To recognize the day, a free 'Slay Boredom' event, run by Academie Glorianna, from the British Federation for Swordmanship.

Experts dressed in armour were also giving jousting demonstrations and combat displays.

Like in Darwen, all the events were put on free of charge.
