Every so often we come across things that one finds hard to believe.

After having campaigned for years to reclaim the blue passport we find out that they will in fact be made in France. The blue passport was all about being more British and putting two fingers up to the rest of Europe.

But of course we couldn’t make the passports cheap enough so the contract was awarded to a company to mainland Europe. You couldn’t make this up.

Now, I am all for leaving the EU now. Okay, that came out wrong…I am resigned to the fact that we must leave the EU. It has to be done so let us just face up to it.

But I am still reminded of a few fibs that were constantly rammed down our throats. As well as the blue badge debacle which now has its own campaign I was actually looking forward to welcoming a whole load of curry chefs to the UK.

I recollect International Development Secretary Priti Patel launching an appeal for voters to support Brexit, because it would in effect help to ‘save Curry Houses’.

The point being that because we had uncontrolled immigration from Europe this was in some way hampering efforts for people from South Asia coming to the country.

At the time I knew this was the biggest load of rubbish since I got told that lamb bhuna was healthy for me and would make me a better footballer.

That was never going to transpire but I do remember a few restaurant owners trying to argue that point with me. Let more South Asians in the country? That would have been a hard one to swallow for some leavers.

And then we had a report out this week which claimed EU nationals are ‘better quality and more eager’ workers than British citizens.

A common belief among some people is that those from abroad are ‘more motivated and willing’ to work longer hours.

Okay, we all know there is an element of truth in this. I’m not saying us Brits are lazy, it is just that when you live here you would rather someone ‘more motivated’ did the job.

It is clear that large parts of the hotel and restaurant industry would not be what it is today if it was not for hard working immigrants.

That’s probably why things won’t be changing as much as some folk may well hope for.

I, like many parts of the UK look forward to Brexit.
