A MAN has died after being hit by a car close to the Turf Moor football ground, police have confirmed.

Police have issued a witness appeal following the fatal collision which happened around 7.40pm yesterday.

Officers said a 57-year-old man, who has not been named but is from Burnley, was walking his dog along Harry Potts Way when he was hit by a silver Vauxhall Vectra outside the Park View pub.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with a number of serious injuries but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a 37-year-old man from Burnley, was not injured. No arrest has been made.

The man's dog was taken to Oakmount Veterinary Centre in Burnley but died shortly after.

Police said the man had been walking from Higgin Street towards Turf Moor in the lead up to the fatal collision.

Sgt Malcolm Bell said: "These are tragic circumstances and my thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this time.

"We are appealing for witnesses to come forward following the collision.

"We are particularly keen to trace anyone who saw what happened or who saw the Vauxhall car in the minutes prior to the incident."

Brian Duckett said had been at a football club function and gave the man first aid, using the club's defibrillator, until the ambulance arrived.

He said: "We did not witness the accident only the aftermath.

"I just gave basic first aid until the ambulance arrived.

"There was also another man who performed CPR on the gentleman as I was sorting the defibrillator.

"It was very bad, we are still very shaken up."

Harry Potts Way was closed from the junction with Higgin Street to Turf Moor for around seven hours but has since re-opened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log reference 1233 of March 23.
