SOME of the photographs which we reproduce from the Lancashire Telegraph archives really conjure up the feeling of a bygone era.

Today’s picture, which was taken in 1954, shows three blacksmiths at work.

Ted Riding is pictured shoeing a horse aided by Jim and Fred Rayton at their smithy on Forrest Street, Blackburn.

Back in the Fifties there were still blacksmiths in many of the towns East Lancashire although advances in technology and the arrival of more and more commercial vehicles would spell the end for these craftsmen and putting an end to a number of family businesses
