WE take to the air for today’s delve into the Lancashire Telegraph archive with this fascinating aerial photograph of Accrington town centre from 1979.
This is one of those photographs which you can pore over and spot more and more details as you go along.
The town hall and market hall are clearly visible in the middle of the picture with Broadway and the covered market just behind.
This was before the pedestrianisation of Broadway and the white frontage of the Unit Four cinema can easily be seen.
Behind the shops of Broadway - both Woolworth’s and Marks and Spencer were in the town at the time - is the large public car park which disappeared when the Arndale Centre was built.
If you look closely at the left hand edge of the main car park you can see the distinctive shape of the space age public toilets that were a feature of the town centre.
If you have any photographs of East Lancashire in days gone by, you can send them to gill.johnson@nqnw.co.uk.
