AN ‘EYESORE’ site in Accrington could be set to be transformed after council chiefs gave the green light for a development on the site.

For the past 12 months Hyndburn Council has been trying to sell a site on Steiner Street as a potential development.

The authority has received four bids in recent months for the site, including schemes for commercial buildings, or homes or even a mix of market and rented accommodation.

However, the cabinet approved a bid of £205,000 to a developer or constructor with a good track record of development nationally on Wednesday night.

Cllr Munsif Dad, who represents the area, said: “It gives a way forward for negotiations to bring commercial units there.

“As a county councillor I welcome the move as it has become a hot spot for anti-social behaviour.

“Even though there were some terraced houses on there which were knocked down it has also now become a dumping ground for people to empty their cars of rubbish.

“It is good to see that somebody is interested in taking it over.”

In the report to the cabinet it was claimed that the bid was ‘less’ than the market value of the site but it is ‘an open space and subject to constant fly-tipping and reverse the decline which is potentially detrimental to the local amenity on a key gateway to the town centre’.

Meanwhile, Cllr Miles Parkinson, leader of Hyndburn Council said: “The business is a trade counter for a business-to-business site.

“They will be able to get access to the land off the main highway.

“It is extremely good news that there was a lot of interest in the site, with three speculative ones and another which was a firm one.

“It is great as it is on the gateway into Hyndburn.”
