CREWS were called out to a fire at a house in Darwen.

Firefighters said the occupants of the house in Sough Road, Darwen, returned to their house at 3.30pm yesterday to find black smoke coming from the back and fire alarms going off inside.

Two fire engines from Darwen Station attended the incident but when crews arrived the fire had almost burn itself out.

Nobody was injured.

Significant damage was done to the tumble dryer, freezer and contents in the outhouse of the property.

The fire is believed to have started accidentally in the tumble dryer.

Watch manager Tony Keane said: "Two fire engines were called to black smoke at the rear of a property on Sough Road, Darwen, at 3.30pm on February 15.

"The owners of the house had been out for about an hour and returned to smoke alarms upstairs and downstairs sounding.

"On arrival of the fire service the fire had almost burn itself out, not before destroying the tumble drier, adjacent freezer and the contents of the outhouse.

"The rear of the house also suffered heat and smoke damage.

"On investigation the fire was found to have started accidentally in the tumble dryer."
