PERSISTENT and heavy snow is expected overnight according to the latest weather forecast.

Snow, ice and wind are due, with weather warnings in place in parts of the North West.

Commuters have been advised to avoid travelling on the roads between 9pm tonight and 5am tomorrow.

It comes after the Met Office put both yellow and amber warnings in place in areas of the North West.

The chief forecaster announced that between 3-8cm of snow could fall in some places.

Drivers were warned of delays as well as a risk that some vehicles and passengers could become stranded.

The Met Office also said delays or cancellations were likely for those travelling by train or plane.

Residents have been warned that power cuts are probable, and that mobile phone services may be affected.

Yellow warnings also remain in place between 6pm tonight and 6am tomorrow.

The snow is expected to clear before dawn on Thursday.
