It comes as a community group has announced plans to plant a memorial tree for Ms Shaw, who has been described by family and friends as ‘one of the kindest people you could ever meet who would do anything for anybody’.

The much-loved, creative and well-known charity volunteer, who devoted a lot of time to Switched On Rishton, died at the scene from multiple injuries.

Members of Switched On Rishton are planning to plant the 12ft tree outside High Street Medical Centre in the town which will be decorated and lit brightly every year in Ms Shaw's memory. It will be complete with a plaque naming it ‘Susan's Tree’.

Friends are also planning to put collection boxes in shops and pubs to raise money for Ms Shaw's family.

Nick Hayward, chairman of the group, said: "It is with a very heavy heart that news was given to me that one our fundraising superstars, Susan Shaw, was fatally injured in a hit-and-run on High Street in Rishton.

"Susan was an active member of the group — a tremendous help behind the scenes as well as taking part in the fundraising events that have been held over the years.

"She was well liked, she was very popular and she always had a smile on her face. She is going to be terribly missed by the community.

"Hopefully the tree will be a fitting tribute to her. She would have loved it."

Meanwhile, a gofundme page set up to raise £400 towards the cost of Ms Shaw’s funeral has so far raised £5,635. To contribute visit www.gofundme.com/susan-shaws-family-fund.

There will be a fundraiser at Rishton Conservative Club, Cliff Street, from 7pm on February 2.
