A HISTORIC club has been given a makeover just in time for Christmas.

Volunteers turned out in force to make Radcliffe Boys and Girls Club a functional and safe place for young people and their families.

A total of five rooms at the club, in Withins Avenue, have been cleared, repaired and painted by staff from Co-op Insurance and building restoration firm Heightvale.

Staff from Oriel, CLUK and Sergen also volunteered their time to help on the project.

Natalie Wood, a supply chain delivery consultant at Co-op Insurance, said: "Sadly, youth clubs like the Radcliffe Girls and Boys Club are facing closure due to lack of funding and resources, but for the many children and volunteers who benefit, this would be hugely detrimental.

"The Co-op is all about helping to make and keep communities safe, and helping to restore the club, which is fundamental to this community.

"This is just one of the ways we're helping to do that. We wanted to help to create a fun, pleasant and safe environment to enable the club to carry on its brilliant work, well into the future."

Earlier this month, the Radcliffe Times reported that a mass effort was underway to revive the youth club, which first opened its doors in the mid-1960s.

The centre had fallen into disrepair following a gradual decline in staffing but has been saved from closure thanks to a cash injection of more than £20,000.

Joanne Chambers, director at Heightvale, said: "It's really important that we continue to support families and young people though community projects, that in today's current climate, face challenges just to keep going.

"Staff involved in the project have said that the camaraderie on-site gives a real sense of achievement and we’re thrilled to have made a real difference."
