A NEW housing scheme is to be introduced in Hyndburn next month after being given the go-ahead from government.

From March 5 2018 a new extended Selective Licensing scheme of private rented properties in parts of Accrington and Church will be introduced.

Selective Licensing helps tackle low housing demand and requires landlords to comply with a range of conditions to ensure good property management in the designated area.

The new designation takes in additional areas in West Accrington, Church, Spring Hill, Peel and Accrington town centre and requires all landlords in these areas to apply for a licence.

Cllr Clare Cleary, cabinet member for Housing on Hyndburn Council, welcomed the news and said it would help regeneration in the area.

She said: “Selective Licensing is good for residents and landlords, as it raises housing standards, makes areas more attractive and increases housing demand.

"These improvements can make renting privately a longer term viable and sustainable option.

"By working more closely with local residents, landlords and partner agencies we are seeking to achieve a better quality private rented sector including an improvement in property conditions."

Licence application packs will be available from January 24 2018.
