The girls and women were part of the Susan Chippendale School of Dance and they were at Colne Hippodrome, going through their routines for a forthcoming show - Best Foot Forward.

Local dance schools have taught the art to thousands of girls over the decades, who have taken part in concerts, made up the chorus for Christmas pantomimes and given demonstrations at special events and gala days.

Many youngsters have also, over the years, competed in ballet and tap classes at music, dance and drama festivals, such as the Luther Greenwood Memorial Festival, staged at Colne Municipal Hall and taken dance exams, from beginner's level to advanced.

Back in the 40s, 50s and early 60s, most teenagers learned ballroom dance, so they could find partners in places such as Tony's ballroom in Blackburn, but as the era of the pop band came in, so too did other dances - rock 'n' roll and the twist anyone?
