Firefighters attended a chip pan fire at a home in Blackburn.

Two fire engines from Blackburn and Hyndburn attended the domestic fire on Mayfair Crescent, Wilpshire at 2.58pm this afternoon.

The elderly occupant, who was alerted by a neighbour as the smoke alarms were not working, was treated for smoke inhalation and transported by family members to hospital for a precautionary check.

The whole house was smoked logged and the cooker, kitchen cupboards and extractor fan were all damaged by heat and flame.

A fire spokesman said: "Smoke alarms save lives.

"You are more than twice as likely to die in a fire at home if you haven’t got one.

"A smoke alarm is the easiest way to alert you to the danger of fire, giving you and your family precious time to escape."
