PRIMARY pupils took a step back in time to dress up and enjoy a feast while leaning about the Viking age.

Children at Turton and Edgworth Church of England Methodist Primary School delved into Scandinavian history, to learn more about the Vikings.

Around 70 children in Years five and six at the school on Bolton Road showcased their knowledge at a special Viking banquet earlier this month.

Parents and carers enjoyed performances by the children including drama pieces and songs, as well as Viking sagas and stories and poems, known as kennings.

Staff at the school said everyone enjoyed the day which helped showcase what they have been learning about this term.

Year five class teacher Katie O’Donnell said: “The staff, children, parents and guardians had such a wonderful time during the unique presentation evening.

“Pupils have been learning about the Vikings as their class topic this term, and so were full of facts and information about the Viking Age.”

The banquet featured a traditional three-course Viking meal consisting of vegetable and lentil soup, called ‘brutal broth’ and garlic chicken and barbecue ribs with a ‘Norse sauce’.

The meal, which also featured shortbread and cherry ‘shield’ biscuits and rice pudding, was served by children who had helped school catering staff prepare some of the courses.

Robyn Valentine, Year six class teacher, said: “Pupils were dressed in homemade Viking outfits which added to the authenticity of the event.

"I am so proud of the children for their excellent behaviour and manners – they showcased a truly epic time in history with passion and enthusiasm.”

The Viking Age took place from the late eighth to the mid-11th century across Northern Europe and pupils have been studying it since the start of the year.
