POLICE who went to a Burnley house found a cannabis 'farm' growing 11 plants.

Blackburn magistrates heard Desmond Robert Campbell admitted growing the plants from seeds and said he would possibly sold some of his crop to friends.

Campbell, 41, of Eliza Street, Burnley, pleaded guilty to producing cannabis and abstracting electricity without authority.

He was sentenced to six weeks in prison suspended for 12 months, with a 15 rehabilitation activity day requirement and three months drug rehabilitation requirement and a curfew between 7pm and 7am. He was ordered to pay £115 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said the plants would had an estimated yield of 440g with a street value of £3,600. She said Campbell told police he smoked between £20 and £30 worth of cannabis a day and would have smoked most of it himself.

"He added that he may have sold some to friends," said Miss Allan. She said it was estimated that over £1,000 worth of electricity had been extracted.

Phillip Turner, defending, said it was the first time Campbell had tried to grow his own which had been suggested to him by a friend.

"When he was arrested he was frank with the police and even a little naive," said Mr Turner. "He told the police he may have sold some to friends when the first words from more sophisticated drug users would have been 'my own personal use.'"

Mr Turner said Campbell had stopped using cannabis since the raid in December.
