HOW many landmarks can you spot in this birds-eye view of Blackburn?

There's a mix of the old and the new, as the face of the town centre underwent a radical transformation.

Modernisation was underway when this image was taken in 1967 - you can just spot the while tiling of part of the new shopping mall, bottom right.

This begs the question, though, as to whether our photographer was in one of the giant cranes that were then on site, to get this aerial shot?

What he has managed to capture is the new market hall, with its distinctive, sloping roof and its bridges across to its distinctive rooftop car park.

In the foreground, old buildings have been swept away, with the area becoming temporary car parks at the bottom of Ainsworth Street, although the demolition men's work is far from complete.

In the distance are the tall statues of many mill chimneys, along with the soot-blackened Holy Trinity Church and the newly built Larkhill flats, top left.

The keen eyed will be able to pick out three breweries - the tower of Thwaites' Star brewery and, at the top right, Whitbread's, whose brick building fronted Salford and Dutton's behind.
