A COUNCIL says it remains committed to providing free car parking for shoppers in the town centre.

Rossendale Council have responded to claims that they are planning to charge for people shopping in Rawtenstall town centre.

A petition has been launched against the council by Friends of Rawtenstall.

The group have voiced concerns that small businesses would be hurt in the town.

Cllr Andrew MacNae, Portfolio holder for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: “The council have started to look at this issue as parking in Rawtenstall is becoming a real issue especially with commuters parking up all the day which limits spaces for shoppers and affects trade.

“No decisions have yet been made and we will be asking for traders’ and residents’ views before deciding what to do.

"We will also want to look at it in terms of the wider plans for Rawtenstall and make sure any decision supports the vision for the town centre.

“To be clear though councillors are committed to maintaining  free parking for shoppers”
