A DISQUALIFIED driver raced away after being spotted behind the wheel by police.

Blackburn magistrates heard that even after a stinger had been deployed Matthew Thomas Stow managed to reach speeds of over 60 mph as he tried to evade capture.

Stow, 23, of Astbury Chase, Darwen, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on Blackburn Road, Duckworth Street, Union Street, Robin Bank Road, Heys Lane, Bolton Road and Alan Shearer Way, disqualified driving and driving with out insurance. He was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced on November 27.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said as soon as the police spotted Stow they recognised him as a disqualified driver, put on their blue lights and started to follow him. He drove along Blackburn Road towards Darwen town centre on the wrong side of the road and into oncoming traffic. He went through red traffic lights at 70 mph before the stinger was deployed.

"Even after the stinger had been deployed he continued to take high risk action, ignoring red traffic lights and still reaching speeds of over 60 mph," said Miss Allan. "Eventually his tyres deflated completely and the police were able to arrest him."
