FANS of the Lancashire Cricket League Cricket has, over many decades, been able to watch many a top class Test player ply his trade at local grounds.

Since first being formed in 1892, the likes of Learie Constantine, Kapil Dev, Michael Holding, Viv Richards, Denis Lillee and Jason Gillespie have been among the boundaries and the wickets at grounds from Rishton to Rawtenstall and Clitheroe to Colne.

The league celebrated its centenary was celebrated in 1992 and, six years later, the Horse Bamboo theatre and arts group, based in Rossendale, staged a major exhibition, outlining its history.

Specialising in puppetry and masks - it is now one of the leading practitioners in this field across Europe - Horse and Bamboo created giant masks of some of the professionals to take to the field during over 100 years.

They were used, too, when the theatre took part in Rossendale carnival.

A Telegraph photographer was on hand to capture, from left, Rebecca Hodgson, Damian Jones and Debre Lewer, before they set off in the colourful parade.

Can you recognise the cricketers from the masks made by Horse and Bamboo, which was established in 1978 by Bob Frith - and whose first project involved erecting a carved stone high on the moors of Rossendale.
