A SPECIALIST company famous for working on church roofs has won a major commission from Victoria Beckham.

Director of Darwen Terracotta Jon Wilson was surprised by a call earlier this year from the firm founded by ‘Posh Spice’ to supply 20 large pieces of specialist-glazed work for a major fashion event at one of her Paris outlets.

He admits the contract was ‘a bit unusual’ for the Blackburn-based firm whose core business is producing and installing specialist brownish/orange clay tiles and decorative architectural pieces in buildings across the UK.

The coloured ceramic items are ready for delivery to the French capital from the factory in Challenge Way, Whitebirk, as work starts on dozens of metallic-glazed black facing tiles to clad the new London Office of another fashion icon Alexander McQueen.

Mr Wilson said: “We were contacted by Victoria Beckham Limited by their head of Architectural Projects, whom I knew from a previous firm, to produce special, very large pieces for their shop in Paris.

“There were 20 pieces which are to be used for display purposes.

“They chose three colours: a blue/black mottle, a blue and a pink. The pieces were square triangular and round.

“They were all manufactured here in Blackburn for delivery prior to a major Paris event.

“Whilst we do architectural interiors, this is a bit unusual but hopefully there will be more such commissions.

“With regard to the fashion world, we are also doing the external cladding to Alexander McQueen’s new London offices in Clerkenwell.”

Cllr Phil Riley, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s regeneration boss said: “Darwen Terracotta is a brilliant company flying the flag for Blackburn in a range of usual places around the world.

“This is another remarkable contract for a firm now recruiting for people and offering fascinating careers for those with a creative talent.

Darwen Terracotta Limited was re-founded in September 2015 from the remains of the terracotta business previously belonging to Shaws of Darwen Ltd.

It has recently been working at St Catherine’s Parish Church in Horwich, and London’s famous Natural History Museum having previously worked on the Savoy Hotel and Harrods in the capital.
