ONE of Blackburn Cathedral's most senior clergy is retiring after six years in his post.

The Rev Dr Ian Stockton has been Canon Chancellor at Lancashire's premier Anglican plave of worship since 2011.

A special celebratory lunch is to be held after the morning service on Sunday October 1 for the congregation and clergy to say farewell to him and his wife Janet.

The couple are moving to spend their retirement in Lincoln where Canon Stockton spent 13 years training people for the lay and ordained ministry throughout that county before taking his role in Blackburn.

Originally from the North-east, he had earlier been Team Rector of Monkwearmouth in Sunderland.

His role as Canon Chancellor gave him responsibility for the Cathedral as a place of learning, hospitality and care.

He also led its educational programme for all ages, fostering theological reflection and growth in discipleship, developing pastoral care offered through the Cathedral community, supporting the ministry to visitors, including school groups, and engaging with the arts and other disciplines in interpretation and exhibitions.

Speaking of the recent developments at and around the Cathedral Canon Stockton said: β€œIt has been a privilege to be part of this urban transformation.

"My wife Janet and I are leaving Blackburn with many happy memories.

β€œI will miss some of the present responsibilities, routine and opportunities.

"I shall value the freedom to explore cherished pursuits and new connections.”

Canon Andrew Hindley said: "Ian has made an enormous contribution to the Cathedral and the life of Blackburn.

"He has done a huge amount for education and young people in the town.

"I personally shall miss him and his support greatly."
