A BID to reopen town centre public toilets has been knocked back by councillors.

A petition with 2,000 signatures was presented to Hyndburn Council calling for the reopening of the Peel Street toilets in Accrington.

However, council bosses voted against reinstating the toilets saying it would cost too much and there were alternative facilities.

Councillors predicted it would cost ‘around £16,000’ to reopen the toilets.

Petition co-organiser Cheryl Duffy said: “Because of the closure we now have reports of people, including children urinating in the streets and against council buildings.”

However the council did vote in favour of going back to the portfolio holder to look at the idea of community toilets.
