TWO petitions which have gathered more than 1,000 signatures each are set to be debated by Hyndburn Council.

More than 1,200 residents and business owners have called for the council to reopen toilet facilities in Peel Street, Accrington after they were closed in July last year.

Meanwhile more than 1,000 signatures have been acquired to ‘Save Highams Playing Fields’, as Accrington Stanley Community Trust continue to work on plans for a £2million sports hub on the site.

Members of the group will also be holding a protest outside the Town Hall to show ‘how passionate they are’ about the subject.

Jackie Rawstron from the ‘save Highams Playing Fields’ committee said: “We’ve had ongoing public support so we’re just asking everyone to come down.

“We just went them all to wave their posters to make their feelings known.”

The organisers of the petitions will be invited to speak for up to five minutes at the full council meeting at Accrington town hall tomorrow.

The petition may then be debated by councillors for up to 20 minutes.

Council leader Cllr Miles Parkinson will then be given up to five minutes to sum up following the debate and a decision will be made over what action to take.

The full council meeting will take place from 7pm.
