Mr Hussain, the manager of the Whalley-based taxi firm Tiger Tiger, said: “If you go towards Burnley, Blackburn and Accrington there is a big difference in petrol prices compared to the rural Ribble Valley. The difference is four to five pence a litre.

“My concern is that big stores that are a distance away from us, like Tesco and Asda, are able to provide cheaper prices for fuel because people spend money in the shop itself.

“I do not understand why we can’t keep the fuel prices at one or two pence difference in every petrol station in the country?”

Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at confused.com, said: “Diesel and petrol prices are continuing to show an upward curve, impacted in the short-term by events such as Storm Harvey and the rising cost in the price per barrel.”
