STUDENTS from a Burnley sixth form visited Towneley Hall to learn about the history of the town at war.

Year 12 pupils from Thomas Whitham Sixth Form were given a guided tour and were able to hold soldier Thomas Whitham's Victoria Cross.

A spokesman for the school said: "It was a special moment for all concerned as the sixth form's namesake was celebrated for his brave contribution to the war effort and beyond.

"Whitham's story will continue to inspire generations of Burnley children as the sixth form works to encourage its students to believe in ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things."
