A MINT confectioner has been given a revamp after a near £1m investment at its manufacturing plant.

Big Bear Confectionery has provided the money as part of a major investment programme to renovate and improve its Blackburn plant, where it produces its world-famous Mint Imperials.

The factory, which employs 150 staff, is also actively recruiting for more engineers and operatives, to meet increasing demand for the iconic sugar-coated mint, which has been produced in Blackburn since the 1960s.

Sandra Fawcett, head of operations for Big Bear Confectionery, said: "This latest investment has created the perfect conditions for the perfect mint.

"Our new process ensures the optimum drying times between each coat of sugar syrup, which is essential for the perfect crispy shell, that smooth texture on the tongue, vibrant white colour and consistently fresh flavour."

Upwards of three million mints are produced every day at the factory in Hill Street, which serve major retailers, convenience stores and independents.

Ms Fawcett said: “Mint production is a very specialist craft and we invest in intensive training for our Blackburn team.

"Many of our expert operatives have been making mints for more than 20 years and mentor our new recruits in this specialist skill.

"Their feedback on the new facility and the improved working environment has been tremendous.”

The Blackburn plant, which also specialises in sugar-coated mini-eggs and chocolate covered raisins and nuts, dates back to 1928.

It gained a reputation in the 1960s as one of the UK’s foremost manufacturers of sugar-coated cake decorations.

Cllr Jan Yusuf Virmani, who represents the Audley ward on Blackburn with Darwen council, welcomed the investment as 'positive news' for the area.

Cllr Virmani said: "I think it's a very good investment that is much needed in Blackburn.

"The plant has been a part of Blackburn for a number of years and is a valued part of the community."

"As a council, we're always looking at trying to bring in new jobs, and as long as they're jobs for people in Blackburn, I'm happy."
