FIELD nurses, who provide free health check-ups to farmers and their families in the Ribble Valley, have been nominated for a national business award.

Ribble Valley’s Crossroads Care Field Nurse project is one of five finalists in the Best Social Enterprise/Community Project of the Year category of the 2017 Rural Business Awards.

The charity was started by a team of volunteers including Roger Dugdale, the fifth-generation owner of a cattle feed business which supplies dairy farmers across the North West.

Mr Dugdale said: “It’s been a great success so far, with more than 200 people visiting our nurses.

“The nomination for a Rural Business Award came as a surprise to us.

“Twelve months ago we set out with the modest aim of raising awareness around the impact of rural isolation on physical and mental health.

“You ask a farmer when the last time they saw a doctor and I bet they’ll say they’ve never seen one.

“To win a Rural Business Award would be fantastic for us, if only just to spread the word and reassure people that support is available if they need it.”

The Rural Business Awards 2017 will be held at Denbies Wine Estate, Surrey on August 5. For more details head to https://www.ruralbusinessawards.co.uk/
