A COUNCILLOR has been suspended by Rossendale and Darwen Conservative Association.

Labour has demanded more details of the case.

Association chairman Lee Parker said this afternoon: "I can confirm that Rossendale and Darwen Conservative Association has suspended Cllr David Stansfield pending an investigation."

He declined to discuss the reasons for the suspension which is likely to be discussed at a routine meeting of the association executive tonight.

Cllr Stansfield represents Helmshore ward on Rossendale Borough Council and Rossendale West on Lancashire County Council.

County Cllr John Fillis, deputy leader of the Labour group on Lancashire County Council, has demanded the Conservative Association 'come clean over the suspension '.

He said: "It has been confirmed that Rossendale borough Councillor and Lancashire County Cllr David Stansfield has been suspended by the Conservative party pending an investigation but he has not been suspended by either Lancashire or Rossendale Conservative Groups.

"We are seeing Lancashire Conservative falling apart at the seams but the public deserves the truth now."
