PEOPLE over 65 in East Lancashire are among the fastest-growing age group for business owners, new data has shown.

The Barclays Business statistics show a 140 per cent national surge in business owners in that range over the last decade.

In the same period businesses run by those aged 25-34 grew by a much more modest 23 per cent.

New businesses set up by the over-55s are also having a significant impact, with Barclays estimating that start-up businesses set up by those in that age group in 2015 contributed more than £7billion to the UK economy in the following year.

Barclays has now invited Liz Earle to take a role as an entrepreneurial business adviser to support ‘olderpreneur’ customers.

She said: “It’s great to see them taking the plunge in later life, rather than feeling it’s too late.”

Ian Rand, CEO of Barclays Business Banking, said: “It is fascinating to see this new emerging trend of ‘older’ entrepreneurs.”
