A CONTROVERSIAL pub is facing objections as it looks to extend its opening hours until as late as 6.30am on August Bank Holiday weekend.

The Walmsley Arms in Great Harwood has submitted a temporary event notice to remain open until 6.30am on Sunday, August 27 to show the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor fight.

The notice also requests the venue can serve alcohol and hold events including music until 4.30am on Saturday, August 26, and Monday, August 28.

However an objection to the plans has been received by the local authority’s environmental officer.

A decision on whether opening hours will be extended will be made at the Hyndburn Council licensing sub-committee meeting on Monday at Scaitcliffe House in Accrington.

Paul Thwaites, environment control officer, submitted a complaint against the notice, stating it would be a ‘public nuisance’.

He said in a statement: “There have been numerous complaints in the past regarding excessively loud music from this premise resulting in the serving of an abatement notice to prevent the playing of excessively amplified loud music.”

In the application for the notice it is stated last entry policy will be in place one hour before close each night.

Usually the Queen Street venue closes on 3.30am on Saturday, 2.30am on Sunday and 12.30am on Monday.

Walmsley Arms and premises supervisor John Yeoman went before the licensing sub-committee earlier this year after complaints.

Mr Yeoman was removed as supervisor and the pub had its hours shortened, however the decision was appealed at Blackburn Magistrates Court in June.

Following the result, a solicitor’s report from the portfolio of cabinet member for resources Cllr Gareth Molineux said: “Mr Yeoman was re-instated as the designated premises supervisor.

“Although Lancashire Constabulary accepted that the council was correct to remove him at the time of the review, it was now of the opinion that the committee’s action has resulted in Mr Yeoman improving his management of the premises.”

But he said he saw no issue with the temporary notice.
