A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl is set to climb six peaks in six weeks to raise money after her granddad was treated for cancer.

Jasmine Hartley challenged herself to reach the summit of the tallest hills in the North West during the summer holidays.

The Salterforth Primary School pupil took on the challenge after her grandad, Chris Oldham, was treated with bowel cancer a couple of years ago.

The youngster has already managed to reach the summits of Weets, Boulsworth, Pendle and Pen-y-ghent Hill, and is set to tackle Ingleborough and Whernside peaks before the summer draws to a close.

The youngster originally wanted to do a sponsored walk for Cancer Research but the idea grew bigger and bigger, according to her mum, Claire.

Mrs Hartley, 42, of James Street, said Jasmine has walked up the hills with her dad, Mathew, 46, and her grandad.

She said: "Jasmine has done ever so well so far, she has been really braved and done lots of walking.

"She's raising money for Cancer Research as the charity is close to our hearts.

"Her grandad was treated with medicine and technology which would have been funded by Cancer Research so she wanted to do it as a thank you and to help other grandads."

The two remaining peaks, Ingleborough and Whernside, stand at 723meters and 736meters respectively and are the highest points in the Yorkshire Dales.

A target of £200 was set but the youngster has raised more than £700.

Mrs Hartley said: "She came up with the idea herself and has stayed determined to do it during the summer holidays.

"She started with the smallest peak, which was Weets, and then attempted the bigger ones.

"She whinged a little bit on one of the windy days, but she got up the hill in the end."

"I'm really proud of her and I think all her school friends will be when she goes back in September."
