ONE student will was celebrating her A-level results while on a prestigious scholarship in honour of murdered MP Jo Cox.

Jess Henderson, a St Mary’s College student, is in the United States participating in the Jo Cox Memorial Exchange.

The 18-year-old, from Blackburn, has been offered a place at the University of Cambridge after achieving an A* in english literature and As in biology and history.

The Jo Cox Memorial Exchange invites young people who are actively involved in promoting social cohesion in their communities to share ideas on how communities in the US and UK promote hope and inclusion.

As the A-level results were published in the UK, Jess was exploring programmes that are promoting tolerance and inclusion in communities and schools in America whilst being exposed to diverse and vibrant urban communities that are struggling with unemployment.

She will study human, social and political sciences at Robinson College, University of Cambridge.

A spokeswoman for St Mary’s College said: “Jess’s passion for politics and social sciences was cultivated when she was elected as Member of the UK Youth Parliament in 2015, representing her home borough of Blackburn with Darwen.

“She was appointed to a position offering experience of the workings of government, regularly meeting with councillors and MPs on boards and committees.

“She also took part in the UK Youth Parliament’s annual debate, televised live in the House of Commons.”

Before flying to the US, Jess said: “The support you receive from St Mary’s was invaluable in the university application process.”

The Shear Brow sixth form achieved a 99 per cent pass rate.
