A FORMER dancer who travelled the globe has celebrated her 104th birthday in a fun-filled nostalgic style.

Belong Atherton resident Amy Hirst was treated to an around-the-world-themed afternoon party at the care village after being chauffeured round Leigh in her favourite car, a 1959 Cadillac coupe.

The iconic sports car she travelled in is owned by former wrestler John Turner, who drove the centenarian through Leigh on July 22 passing through roads such as Charles Street, where she grew up, before going back to the Mealhouse Lane care village for a party.

Amy said: “I had such a wonderful day.

“It was my favourite ever birthday and I am overwhelmed by how many people have contributed to making it so special.

Amy, who lives in the care village's Pretoria household, enjoyed a buffet and drinks at Belong Atherton’s social event room The Venue, with each table decorated to represent a country she visited in her career such as Spain, Canada and Switzerland.

Entertainment at the event included a performance from singer Gary Alexander who belted out travel-related classics like Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me To The Moon in his set list.

More than 50 birthday cards and gifts were sent to Amy from businesses and friends of the care village.

She even got a surprise visit from Atherton firefighters who hand-delivered a card to her.

Amy also received a phone call from Coronation Street star Andrew Whyment on the day to pass on his birthday wishes.

Experience coordinator at Belong Atherton Gemma Willetts, who organised the party, said: “It was great to see Amy having such a good time.

“The response from the local community was astonishing.

“I would like to thank the individuals and organisations who donated things for the party and everyone who sent Amy a birthday message.”

Amy was presented with a birthday cake at the event and the room was decorated with a specially-made balloon in the shape of the number 104 as well as potted plants.
