CLITHEROE may be hosting Foxyfest, a day-long music festival at the St Michael and St John Centre today but, as this photograph from the Lancashire Telegraph archives from 1972 shows, there is a history of live music events in the town.

The picture was taken in the grounds of Clitheroe Castle during the afternoon of the festival. Radio One DJ Pete Drummond was the compere for the event which featured Trees, Bridget St John, UFO, Third Ear Band, Brinsley Schwartz and headliners MC5.

The event was organised by Clitheroe Young People’s Recreation Committee who had been given £1,500 by the council to stage the event.

Brinsley Schwartz which featured Nick Lowe on bass were forced into added duties after MC5 broke down on the motorway. It was reported that a gang of Hell’s Angels rescued the legendary rockers and ferried them to Clitheroe allowing them to play a brief 30 minute set before the midnight curfew.
