EIGHT greenspaces in Hyndburn have been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as some of the very best in the world.

The recognition has been given to Accrington Cemetery and Crematorium, along with Arthur Wilson Playing Fields & Woodlands, Lowerfold Park, Cutwood Park, Oakhill Park, Mercer Park, Gatty Park and Peel Park.

The sites are part of 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that have received the award.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign of a space’s environmental standards, maintenance, and visitor facilities.

Cllr Ken Moss, cabinet member for parks on Hyndburn Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive eight Green Flag Awards from Keep Britain Tidy.

“A lot of hard work, by a lot of people, has gone into getting these Green Flags and their award is a testament to the sterling job done by the many community groups and staff involved.

“This shows that they are well managed and maintained, welcoming, safe for users and have good links with the local community.”
