FIREFIGHTERS are warning about the dangers of disposal barbecues after a blaze destroyed decking and ripped through the roof of a property being renovated.

Crews were mobilised to the property in Greenthorne Close, Edgworth, at 1.30am and stayed until 9am the next morning.

At the height of the blaze, around 15 firefighters were tackling the blaze and an aerial appliance was used.

Earlier that evening, food was being cooked on a disposal barbecue which had been left on the decking and is being blamed for causing the fire, either through a stray coal, or the heat causing wood to smoulder and set alight.

One member of the family, who did not want to be named said: “We could see the flames — it was well alight.
