FARAKH Ajaib wrote his name in to the Fosters Golden Cue record books after winning the overall title for a third time.

The Oswaldtwistle Con Club potter came from behind to seal a 4-2 victory over Wayne Cotterill at a packed Ighten Leigh Social Club.

While the match did not hit the heights of the quarter finals and semi finals in terms of break building, it proved to be an intriguing affair as both players went head-to-head on the small and large tables.

Large table champion Farakh won the toss and opted to start on his favoured surface but Cotterill - who scored a record-breaking 137 in the small table final - took one against the head in the opening frame that went down to the black ball.

Cotterill has been in superb form on the small table, having also made a break of 114 in the semi finals, and he stormed in to a 2-0 lead thanks to some great potting on his home table.

But Farakh, who had only lost three frames on his march to the final, got in to gear and comfortably won as the action returned to the large table.

The fourth frame on the small table proved to be the pivotal moment of the final.

Cotterill slammed in an impressive break of 52 and looked odds on to be on his way to another big total.

But he broke down unexpectedly when he missed a frame winning red to the corner bag.

Farak was 56 behind but looked up to the task and, after a steady knock of 25 and some superb safety play, he clinched the frame to level the final.

It proved to be a blow for Cotterill as Farakh took control and wrapped up the next two frames, finishing with a highest break on the night of 58 to take the match and title of overall champion.

The presentation took place straight after the match with Golden Cue committee member Kev Catlow and Graham Jones of Heineken UK doing the honours.

Golden Cue secretary Neil McGovern said: “The standard in the Golden Cue is always very high but this year it went up a level.

“We had some superb matches that will live long in the memory, especially in the knockout stages.

“Ironically, the final probably did not hit those heights but with so much at stake, that is probably not too much of a surprise.

“But it was still a fascinating final and both players played their part.

“I would like to congratulate Farakh on his win, he has now won the overall Golden Cue title three times which is a superb record.”

McGovern said it was great to see so many people turn up for the final and also thanked Heineken UK for their continued support.

He added: “The majority of the players who played this year turned up to watch the final. It was great to see such a big turn out.

“I would like to thank Graham Jones of our sponsors Heineken UK for their continued support, we are extremely grateful.”
