A NEW solar panel park could be built in Altham if plans go ahead.

Proposals have been submitted to Hyndburn Council for the grassland adjacent to the Martholme Water Treatment Works in Burnley Road.

The site would have a generating capacity of up to One MegaWatt of power and a proposed operational life of 25 years.

Some of the land for the proposed site is greenbelt land, but United Utilities hope the environmental benefits mean it falls under ‘very special circumstances’ and will be allowed.

A spokesman said: “The development would provide renewable electricity to the operational water treatment works increasing the sustainability of this essential operation.

“It will assist United Utilities in stabilising utility bill prices for local residents.

“Overall, the environmental benefits of deriving electricity from a renewable source to directly supply the water treatment works is considered to constitute very special circumstances.”

A report from the company estimates the site would be able to provide services to help around 270 homes.

A decision will be made in the coming months.
