CROWDS gathered to celebrate the 'ages of Accrington' as the town's carnival made a much welcomed return.

Thousands of people braved the weather to line the streets for the procession and enjoy the entertainment on offer at Oak Hill Park.

A variety of musical acts performed throughout the day including East Lancashire Concert Band and Accrington Pipe band.

The procession, which started in Thorneyholme Road and featured floats from a selection of local charities and businesses, were themed around 'ages of Accrington'.

The floats then toured Whalley Road, Church Street and Blackburn Road before ending on Church Street.

Carnival queen Helen Trickett, 34, from Accrington, said: "It's amazing, I've been very excited about this for ages.

"It's been a fabulous day with a fabulous turnout.

"When I was a little girl I used to love Disney and all the princesses, and now I am one, it's just great."

The event was cancelled last year, and was in danger of not going ahead again this year after previous organisers Accrington Lions stood down.

However, a new carnival committee was formed and headed up by Gayle Knight, to ensure the event would go ahead.

Crowds were also entertained by performances from Emma Louise Cheerleading, Halo Performers and Ashleigh's Dance Academy, among others.

Stalls selling local produce were available for visitors to peruse.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones said: "It's great to see everything going on and the dozens and dozens of stalls on offer.

"Thankfully the weather has held out.

"Everybody has just been having a really good day."

A marquee featuring a Punch and Judy show, wrestling, a football shooting competition and balloon modelling was also available for children.

Hyndburn Mayor Cllr Peter Britcliffe, who led the procession, said: "It's just so nice how it brings all the community together.

"It's just been a fantastic day and it's great to see such a good turnout.

"It's great that were are able to keep this tradition of the borough going."

Also in attendance on the day was carnival princess Isobela Grace Kozlowski and prince Ellis Chamberlain.

Catherine Holliday, 45, from Baxenden, who attended the event with her two children, said: "It's a lovely day out, there's something for everyone.

"It's just lots of fun, thankfully its not rained.

"It's great to give everyone in the area a chance to come together and have a fun day."
