A THIEF who targeted a 68-year-old woman in her own home has been jailed for three years.

Claire Hutchins targeted her victim at her home in Colne.

Police said the 40-year-old entered her victim's home in Union Street on the pretence of asking for a glass of water.

But once Hutchins, of Earle Street, Colne was in her victim's home she threatened her by saying 'I don’t want to hurt you but I need your money,' officers said.

The frightened victim handed over £50 before Hutchins left.

Officers said she was later identified from CCTV footage and forensic evidence inside the victim’s home.

Burnley Crown Court heard prior to the robbery Hutchins had also knocked on the doors of a number of other elderly residents in nearby streets with various tales about having been assaulted and needing money to get a taxi. All were a rouse.

Hutchins pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to three years behind bars by a judge.

DC Dave Greenwood, who investigated the case, said the police are 'determined to protect' the most vulnerable member of the community.

He said: "Hutchins clearly targeted elderly residents and made them feel vulnerable in their own homes.

"She made up various lies about needing money before she eventually made her way into the victim’s house and threatened her.

"I am pleased she has now been brought to justice for her actions and the outcome of this case shows that we are determined to protect our communities, especially those who are most vulnerable.”

Cllr Tony Greaves, deputy leader of Pendle Council, urged residents to be extra careful abut who they let into their homes.

He said: “People should always be very careful about who they let into their house or what they agree to.

“They should, if possible, ask for identification.

“Older persons should keep the door on the latch if it is someone they do not know knocking on the door.”
